The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible: A Free Market Odyssey is the story of a young man who is shipwrecked on an island called Corrumpo. In the style of classics such as Gulliver’s Travels and The Little Prince, Jonathan Gullible encounters the inane policies of the Council of Lords in the politically correct island of Corrumpo. The Council imposes a "tall tax" to level society, the Council uses an "applause meter" to decide enthusiasm of voters, and the Council bans dreamy "Merryberries." Published in more than 40 languages, the book is an ideal supplement for economics classes and is a natural for provoking debate on the major issues of the day.
Leonard E. Read Book Award for Excellence in Economic Education, --Foundation for Economic Education, Irvington-on-Hudson, New York
Leavey Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education, “The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible has been selected to receive a Leavey Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, this special program, endowed by The Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Foundation, permits Freedoms Foundation to honor educators for their innovative efforts to help young people better understand the function and benefits of America's private enterprise system." --Russell K. Schulz, Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
Endorsed by Milton Friedman, Nobel laureate in economics, "It certainly presents basic economic principles in a very simple and intelligible form. It is an imaginative and very useful piece of work."
10-minute computer animated the “Philosophy of Liberty” will be shown followed by a talk about liberty by Jim McIntosh.
Ken Schoolland, the author, is presently an associate professor of economics and political science at Hawaii Pacific University. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the International Society for Individual Liberty, a member of the Board of Scholars for the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, and a Sam Walton Fellow for Students in Free Enterprise.
The translator, Faisal Ahmed Hassan, is an author and radio journalist, educated at the University of Winnipeg in Administrative Studies, Justice and Law Enforcement. He is an active writer, contributing regularly to Hanad magazine, Somalilink newspaper, Somali Voice, as well as on-line publications. He has one book in Somali, the novel Maandeeq, set in Mogadishu during the early stages of the Somali civil war. Maandeeq, a she camel, is now translated into English and awaiting publication.
Jim McIntosh lives with his wife, two dogs and three cats in Ajax. He has four grown children and two grandchildren (so far). He is a graduate of the University of Toronto’s School of Practical Science (Engineering). At one time, Jim believed that government had to solve problems like poverty, inflation and crime. Some time ago he came to the conclusion that government creates more problems than it solves, and joined the Libertarian Party to campaign for a government limited to protecting our life, liberty and property from those who would take it by force. Jim has been the Treasurer of the Ontario Libertarian Party since 1994, and a frequent candidate in both provincial and federal elections.
